beautiful picture, but expensive, May 25, 2004 By This review is from: Toshiba SD-P2600 8.9-Inch Portable DVD Player , Silver (Electronics) I went shopping for a portable DVD player and the store I went to had about 14 different portable DVD players plugged into the same video feed playing The Lord of the Rings DVD. This portable DVD player blew all its competitors out of the water - including the two Panasonic models I came to look at. None of them had a picture that could compare to this one. The colors are rich and the black is as dark as I have ever seen. The sound produced by the external speakers is pretty good too, the movie is sometimes hard to hear in a noisy vehicle so headphones may be required on a road trip. Two headphone jacks are on the side of the unit. I have not experienced any problems with viewing angle when watching a movie with two people with the player inbetween us.

I can't imagine a better picture--great colors, not grainy at all, really nothing to distract you from the DVD you are watching.
The audio is almost unbelievable. I have a nice but not-to-expensive pair of Sony headphones attached and the sound is better than any movie theater or home system I have ever heard.
As to the finer points, like having to start over after a power shutdown, I really can't find fault with the machine. Once you learn to use the navigation button, you can do pretty much anything you want without losing your place or shutting down the power. Yes, if you turn the unit off you have to find your place again, but that takes less than a minute and then you are back to a really fine experience.

There are a lot of players out there but after reading all the reviews and going to the stores to see them work the Toshiba was hands down the best for the money. Samsung was a close second but what I liked was that the picture on the Toshiba was brighter and sharper. The Toshiba also has a better angle so two people can watch a movie together with not having to sit on top of each other. The sound is great and with the head phones on you really could hear the surrond sound. When I was done buying my case , ear phones and airplane adapter it cost me a little more but well worth it. I really can't see why you would want to go any larger and spend more money because they are getting to the point that for a couple hundred more you can get a laptop. You will not be disapointed with this player.
